<<I, on the other hand, have learned that I am the Grinch that stole the solstice. And so much more.....>>
Now, now, Michael! I certainly do not believe you are the Grinch that stole the Solstice, nor have I ever suggested that you did. My goal is simply that Christians understand that many of the symbols they use to celebrate Jesus' birth are actually pagan in origin. I think pagans get a generally bad rap, unfairly at times. Pointing out how much we share with Christians brings us closer together, yes?
Really, the only thing I can think of that is utterly Christian about Christmas is the Nativity scene. I would think many Christians would love to know this, so that they could have a more pure celebration of what they are actually celebrating, and throw aside the mistletoe and the holly berries, the trees, wreaths, Santa Claus, feasting, and the other things that do not really come from their own traditions.
Perhaps all this is why the Colonial Americans did not celebrate Christmas at all, considering it too pagan? |
