Superconductivity; A coming of age?

The superconductor sector is exhibiting strong symptoms of coming of age. Previously it
was only followed by a few science affectionados and hipsters. The sector was expectedly
disappointing.

However, 1999 witnessed the beginnings of commercialization and mainstream business
acceptance. Product testing by industry has now accumulated more than a full year of
full load testing of superconducting products in industries as diverse as power
transmission, telecommunication and several magnetic applications, most notably
MRI equipment.

Market trading activity is also starting to mature. Rumor driven spikes in volume and
price and hyped activity is giving way to institutional positioning and serious
anticipation of management restructuring results. The analysts have not arrived on the
seen yet, but they can not be far behind.

AMSC?s trading activity consists of more than 50% institutional buying. IMG trading
is building up on the basis of decisive steps taken by management to restructure
operations. Trading in CDTS, ISCO and SCON is based more and more on expected industry
acceptance of superconducting filters in 2G and 3G wireless base station design after
excessive testing in 1998 and 1999.

The sector has performed well for 1999. It has gained 138% on a market cap weighted basis.
The largest gains were registered in the forth quarter, particularly December. Trading
volume gains followed a similar pattern.

In short, the sector ended 1999 on a very strong note. Most issues were amongst the top
5% of the market on a technical basis. The year 2000 promises to be an even more
exceptional year, as the expected product announcements start to flow, and the sector
gains wider institutional acceptance. Increased analyst activity should not be difficult
to expect. With it should come widespread market recognition.

The following is a summary of the sector?s key market data and links to the various
