Yes, inflation made things a lot worse. During that period the Vietnam conflict heated up; we had guns and butter economics; we had major assassinations; Nixon took us off the gold standard (if I remember correctly); Nixon put us on wage and price standards; inflation heated up; Watergate; Nixon's resignation; Ford's Wip Inflation Now program; more inflation; the energy crisis; more inflation; 20 percent interest rates; and finally the culmination with four years of malaise under peanutman.

With the election of Reagan, the U. S. regained its confidence in itself.
