Here is some info on some moves to 12 inch wafers, not that it is important.

UMC, Hitachi to Jointly Make 12-inch Wafers in Japan: Report

TAIPEI, Dec 24 (AFP) - Taiwan's second largest microchip maker United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) is
to team up with Japan's Hitachi Ltd. to make 12-inch wafers, the Commercial Times reported Friday. The
joint-venture, estimated to cost more than 2.0 billion US dollars in total investment, is to utilise one of
Hitachi's plants in Japan after re-equipment, the paper said. It said UMC would have management control of
the new fabrication plant while Hitachi is to provide sufficient orders to ensure its success.
Hitachi, Japan's second largest semiconductor manufacturer, appears to have lost its competitive edge in
recent years to Taiwanese and South Korean competitors, the report said. Neither company would confirm
the reported joint venture.

"Hitachi and UMC are currently in a friendly relationship and we are looking at expanding the relationship
further, but currently nothing has been decided," Hitachi spokesman Yukiaki Ina told AFP in Tokyo.

UMC declined to comment on the report. The company last month began construction of its first 12-inch
wafer fabrication plant in the southern Tainan Science-based Industrial Park. The 3.0 billion dollar investment
is to begin production at the end of 2001 with a monthly capacity of 20,000 wafers. UMC now has seven
fabrication plants in operation making 8-inch wafers.
