NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
This thread had a simply spectacular 1999, conjuring up a very special virtual community and increasing the wealth of the community's members by leaps and bounds. The goal of the thread should be to sustain those activities in Y2K, and to that end I hereby propose the following New Year's resolutions:
FOR NEWBIES AND LURKERS
"I will read the Gorilla Game and many posts before making my public entry to the thread, and consider reading related books and the thread archives, so that when I do eventually post I will add to the thread rather than subtract from it."
"I will respect the fact that I am entering a community, one that already has residents and customs and (to some extent) community leaders, and will not try to force the community to change itself in order to accommodate me."
FOR OLDTIMERS
"I will politely explain the nature of the thread and its philosophy to newcomers."
"I will set an example for newer members through the quality (measured by whatever metric one chooses) of my posts."
FOR ALL
"I will try not to start a flame war by being obnoxious, rude, or offensive."
"I will try not to be oversensitive, and see obnoxiousness, rudeness, and offensivesness everywhere."
"I will not continue a flame war in public beyond an initial response, even if I feel that someone else has been (or is continuing to be) obnoxious, rude, or offensive."
"I will try to keep thread bloat reasonably low, and thread signal-to-noise ratio reasonably high, by using PM's instead of public posts where appropriate and not overdoing it too much on OT discussions."
"I will go easy on those who violate the previous resolution during exceptional times (such as a day when the Q goes up 31%)."
"In general, I will try to think of the thread as much as myself when making posts."
Prosperous investing to all,
