One of the best features for individual subscribers. DWA provides a search engine for their entire database allowing several criteria options. You can search your portfolios for specific patterns or for any stock in the database that meets your requirements.

This is one of the most powerful tools we have to help you search your fundamentally sound lists for those that are technically sound. This screen allows you to search our database of stocks by numerous technical criteria that you select. You can search all 7,500 stocks or you can limit your searches to certain reports or portfolios. Also the results of your queries can be manipulated so that they are presented with specific data and sorted in a particular order. In addition the system allows you to save your results to a portfolio.

Input

Going from top to bottom in sections from left to right.

Yellow section:

Stock Data

Price range ? if you leave this blank it will assume you want all stocks.
*Optionable (all) or (Optionable only)
*Stocks that carry options.

Relative Strength Dow
The stocks strength compared to the Dow. Called the RS chart. RS=Relative Strength.

Signal - (buy) or (sell) - whether the RS chart is on a buy or sell signal. This is not the trend chart.
Column -(X's) or (O's) whether the RS chart is in a column of X's or O's.
Column weeks - how many weeks has the column been in X's or O's.

Trend Chart

This chart is the "trade" chart. The price movement on the exchanges.
Signal (all) (buy) (sell) - whether the trend chart is on a buy or sell signal or all.
Trend (all) (pos) (neg) - Trend is positive if above the *BSL or negative if below the *BRL
Column (X's) (O's) - Whether the trend chart column is currently in X's or O's.
Column weeks - How long has the column been in X?s or O?s.
*BSL=Bullish Support Line
*BRL=Bearish Resistance Line.

Momentum

Daily - enter how many days whether positive or negative or all
Weekly - enter how many weeks whether positive or negative or all
Monthy - enter how many weeks whether positive or negative or all.

Right yellow section:

Moving Averages

All - this is a default setting
50 Day is above the 200 day or below the 200 day
Over bought (+) / Oversold (-)
Enter the percent range. For instance, if you want a stock that is 100% oversold enter in the first box something like -120% and in the second box -99%. You will get stocks in that range. If you want stocks 100% over bought enter in the first box 95% and in the second box 105%. Etc.

30 Day Avg Volume - Enter the shares, measured by hundreds
Market Cap - Enter range, measured x1 Million.
Beta - Enter range
Yield- Greater than or equal to (blank)%

Top of Green section.

Population to choose from.

Select Sectors.
Here is where you can limit your search to a specific sector or choose all sectors.

Also available is the ability to choose above or below a specific percent level. Let's say you wanted a sector above 60% you would check the "above" box and enter 60 into the available box. Then you can select whether that sector chart is in X's or O's.

Select a pattern

Interested in just one particular pattern? Say you are a bullish triangle junkie, just select "bullish triangle" and only that pattern will be pulled in your search. Or, you can select all patterns.

Your Universe

DWA has grouping of stocks already prepared for you:
Everything - this is default setting.
Mid S&P Mid Cap
OEX S&P 100
SPX S&P 500
SML S&P 600
DJIA Dow 30
WEBS
YR2000
Check this area occasionally, DWA may add more universes in the future.

Your Portfolio.

Everything - this is default setting.
The next listings are up to you. Whatever your portfolio's are you can search within them. Let's say you have Value Line 1 and 2 listed stocks in one portfolio and you want to search specifically in that section, select your portfolio listed and it will pull information only from your portfolio that is selected.

Fields to Show and Order.
Decide what you want visible and in what order for your final selection criteria.

Fields of Display are:
Symbol - checked default that may be unchecked.
Comp Name (Company Name) also a default selection
Exchange - what exchange the symbol is trading on
Price - default checked
%OB/OS Wkly - Percent over bought or over sold on a weekly basis.
Yield
Mkt Cap
Sector - default checked
Pattern
Pattern Date
Average Volume
%OB/OS Daily - Percent over bought or over sold on a daily basis.
Beta.
Relative Strength Chart - For the Dow chart only choose RS and column to be displayed.
Trend Chart - Signal, Trend, will show if the signal is a buy or sell and if the trend is + or -.

Momentums - choose to see daily, weekly or monthly or all. Check for the momentum (will show + or -), the date and the cross point. Cross point is when the stock will flip from positive to negative or vice versa.

Sort Order:

This is how you want your search sorted. Check any of these boxes (only 1) and your search will be displayed as such.

Symbol - (alphabetical)
Exchange - all grouped by exchange
Trend - Positive grouped together and negative grouped together.
Comp Name - Company name alphabetical
Sector - Individual sectors grouped together.
Beta - Numerical
Signal - Buys and sells grouped separately.
Price - Numerical
Momentum - negative and positive grouped separately
Pattern - Grouped by pattern and alphabetical
Yield - Numerical
Mkt Cap - Numerical.

When running queries, be sure to customize your results to get the most out of the search. By going to the Output section of the screen, which is green, you can specify how your results are presented. If you sort the output by sector, it concentrate on particular areas of the market. You could also sort by pattern so you see all of the Bullish Catapults or Triangles together.

** Don't forget that you can save your results of a search to a portfolio. This will allow you to use the activity features to help evaluate and track the technical health of the results of your search.

OK, let's say you are bullish in the market and want to go long. You have several options and of course they all depend on your investment style.

I'll first do examples without portfolios, as if you don't have a portfolio set up on DWA or you want to search the whole DWA database. (I do recommend however that you get in the practice of putting together a portfolio of stocks you like fundamentally either from Value Line or from any other form of research you do.).

For good long term stocks you want RS in X's and on a buy signal, positive trend (above the BSL) in a sector that is below 50%.

So starting from the top:

Choose your price range (I normally don't unless I'm doing that "stocks that go to 80 go to 100" kind of thing).

Most stocks are optionable, this is a personal choice. Optionable stocks do tend to be more volatile in certain sectors.

For relative strength select X's and buy for signal.

On the trend chart you want a positive trend. Now, if you select X's for the trend the chart is in X's. As a hint, to find stocks on pullbacks choose O's and you will have strong stocks that are currently pulling back. We'll select O's for now.

This gives you a general search criteria. Now to narrow it down.I'm not going to get into Market cap etc, this gets into fundamentals a little bit.

We'll select a sector that is below 50% and in X?s. (Aerospace Airlines)

I like to sort by patterns.

OK, this is pretty general but here is what we get:

No results. Hmmm. Well, from experience I know that it is usually the trend chart that is too specific so I'll go back and change the trend column to "all" instead of O's.

Now we get some stocks; ACNAF, EUSA, RYAAY, SBSE, UTX

Now you go through the charts and analyze them accordingly.

When you have portfolio's to search through you can do the above search through just that portfolio of stocks.

For shorter term trades you may want to have an RS in X's during more market risk or you can trade RS in O's when market risk is low. Best thing to do is fiddle around with the combinations.
What we can do is have specific needs outlined by some of you and then we can go through some idea searches. Post me criteria's and we'll set times for us to go over it together. An online almost real time search and sort lesson. :-)
