Quincy,

Good post. One glaring correction is in order, however, as regards:

<< GSM worldphones have not become a visibly powerful market force when SBC, a major West coast provider, doesn't carry them >>

SBC carries both the Ericsson i888 and Motorola L-7089 WorldPhones on their GSM network:

pbwireless.com

Omnipoint and VoiceStream carry both as well. Haven't checked Bell South Mobility, Ariel, or Fido, but presumably all carry one or more WorldPhone models.

For those of us that do Europe occasionally WorldPhones with a US subscription are indeed becoming a powerful reality, indeed almost a necessity. I've used the old Bosch on Omnipoint for the last 2 years when traveling abroad. Works great! The Qualcomm from BAM stays at home.

Rentals available. Try one on your next trip abroad.
