As Cheeky pointed out on another thread, the pages I cited could be hoaxes. I just found them today on AltaVista and did not check them out carefully.

As for the effort expended on Y2K being a boondoggle: There was certainly a lot of ridiculous nonsense with survivalists, and stocks like ZITL and VIAS.

But I question the claim that hundreds of billions were spent on Y2K -- this may be the biggest hoax of all. I think much of this money was spent replacing antiquated equipment and software, where Y2K was just one of many reasons for the replacement. I myself spent a year working on a new federal/state interface where Y2K changes were included as part of the project.
