LG develops new high definition DVD player koreaherald.co.kr
LG Electronics has developed a new digital versatile disc (DVD) player which features picture quality more than four times clearer than existing models, the company said yesterday.
The device is based on a new technology called "blue laser (BL) diode pick-up," which can replay HD (high definition)-class video disks with storage capacity of 18 GB.
Most DVD players, which have a maximum capacity of 4.7 GB, can't fully support HD-class signals, the company said.
With a data transmission speed of 24 Mbps, the player also can be used to play digital signals. In addition, LG has developed an 18 GB HD optical disc which is one-fourth the thickness of other discs and is installed with a system that protects it from illegal copying.
LG developed the technology in a two-year project that cost 8 billion won and involved some 40 researchers.
DVD, used to run games, movies and other software on computer and TVs, is widely expected to replace VCRs and CD-ROMs because of its superior picture and sound quality and excellent storage capability.
With the dramatic improvement in picture quality, the company expects the new device to expand the demand for DVD players and place the company in a leadership position in the world market. Updated: 01/04/2000 |
