Jets Coach Bill Parcells Resigns After 8-8 Season, ESPN Reports

East Rutherford, New Jersey, Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- New York
Jets coach Bill Parcells, who led the team to the AFC
championship game last season, resigned, ESPN reported.

The resignation comes after the Jets beat the Seattle
Seahawks on Sunday to finish 8-8 and out of the playoffs. It was
an injury-plagued season that began after quarterback Vinny
Testaverde was lost for the year with an Achilles tendon tear in
the first game.

The Jets started the season 1-6 before winning seven of
their past nine games.

Parcells, who guided the New York Giants to two Super Bowl
titles, said Sunday he hadn't made up his mind about retirement.
He said he would make a decision soon.

Defensive coordinator Bill Belichick carries the title of
assistant head coach and is presumed the heir apparent to
Parcells.

The Jets declined to comment.

Jets owner Leon Hess died last year and the team could be
sold as early as this week.
