One thing has struck me about this whole fiasco: The majority of us, contentedly investing from the perspective of our comfy chairs in the various styles of suburban splendour we call home, watching our investments and our retirement income with senile intesity , treating the real life social consequences of doing business in a place like Indonesia (especially the one we have created through the continued support of regimes like Suharto's),we could have never have imagined that "they", those who have suffered our disengagement, could get to "us". They
were always an abstraction. Now we are finding out that there are
new forms of reciprocation...alot of us were crushed right were it hurts US the most - in our bank accounts- by a scam probably perpetrated by de Guzman and his geologist collegues...but in many ways originating in the very heart of the place itself. We, or our money, clear cut, exploit, pollute and turn blindly from injustices we know are inflicted upon the people of Indonesia as long as the upside is resonable and the grades are there. They have, albeit in their own abstract fashion, have reciprocated. You cannot really expect that there are not consequences to our kind of activities. Noboby can say that they did not know what kind of things were and are going on in Indonesia. This is the pay back. There is no gold FOR ANY OF US in Indonesia. We should dig our own gold out of our own backyards.
