Peter, these wild volatile swings are typical of a late stage mania. if you look e.g. at various commodity charts of the late 70's you will see that at the end of the parabolic rises the price volatility increased markedly. the initial break in prices was usually followed by a last-ditch attempt to regain the old highs, and then the commodity bubbles burst one after the other.
