Singapore, Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of Pacific Internet Ltd., Singapore's No. 2 Internet service provider, rose as much as 53 percent after it named a representative in Israel to develop investment opportunities.

Pacific Internet's shares rose 16 9/16 to 64 1/2 in midmorning trading, and touched 71 5/8 shortly after the Nasdaq stock market opened. Its shares rose 176 percent in 1999.

Pacific Internet said it wants to boost its PACfusion.com electronic commerce and business portal by seeking partnerships, alliances or acquisitions. The company said it will add Israel's telephone and cellular services to PACfusion.com in the countries it serves.

Last month, Pacific Internet cut its access fees in Singapore by 70 percent after rivals SingTel and StarHub Pte. offered free Internet services.
