The answer to all your questions is, "Yes, incrementally. Each increment slightly improved the static paradigm where they had their conferred monopolies."

Your conclusion doesn't follow. The server of today is at the center of a different paradigm than the 1981 desktop was. Wintel is not being granted a monopoly out of the gate by a higher power.

You're waiting for Godot.
