It really does remind us that we are each responsible for our own actions. Here in MD, 1st offense DUI (under 1.0) generally just get a slap on the wrist - probation before judgment (i.e. don't get in trouble with alcohol for a year, and conviction is expunged), a fine of about $500, alcohol class, and a strong suggestion to attend AA, even if the person claims it was an isolated situation; and counsel fees run about $1500. Second offense may result in "pay your own way" 30 day incarceration in a state approved quasi work release alcohol treatment center. Third offense - at least 6 months jail time in some work release program. After that, they throw away the keys, assuming the person hasn't already killed or maimed someone.
What's your friend going to do for transportation? Is there any decent public transportation where you are? I sure hope she doesn't disregard the license suspension; the courts everywhere just hate it when they are flaunted, and really throw the book at violators.
