Amy - <I'm watching to see if AMD finds a ledge, with reasonable margins, to build on. I saw your post. Were you thinking of any market in particular?>

Not really. I was speaking generally, as I was commenting on unsubstantiated rumor. Before commenting further, I would need to see much more detail [w.r.t. the DDR Athlon rumors]. I could speculate, but it would be the purest form of WAG's.

<One of AMD's strength appears to be its tenacity (admirable) and this presents a higher risk in high-end markets, where margins could sustain niches.>

In the short term, AMD does have a product which is seemingly competing with Intel's offerings in what would probably be considered one or two segments (mid range to high end consumer desktop). However, they appear to only have two major OEM's supporting the platform after six months. AMD still has a very long row to hoe to achieve long term viability, IMHO, and I guarantee you Intel is not sitting still or ceding anything relative to product/platform performance or marketshare in any segment it participates in. AMD has yet to demonstrate how it is going to crack the x86 server markets, IT Corporate Desktop markets, etc. So, to answer your question more directly, in the long term, as far as my opinion about AMD vs. sustained long term market presence (and profitability), I am not yet convinced.

Remember ~ a year ago, and how the low end was going to drive the business, all the Celery jokes, and how the K6II and III was going to clean Intel's clock?
