The only downsides to hedging are the eventual loss of premium that you would expect, and the off-side chance that the market remained flat (within your spread) during the period of the options. Other than that, in an uncertain market, it's the way to go if you don't mind spending some premium dollars.

My broker keeps trying to get me to do some laddered bull spreads on various issues. Any thoughts?
