GIANT, CARNIVOROUS ANTS ALL THE RAGE AT BRAZILIAN ZOO
Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Giant, carnivorous rainforest ants the size
of human thumbs are attracting huge crowds to a zoo in the Brazilian
city of Sao Paulo, staff members said Tuesday.
The monster insects devour cockroaches and large bugs and have also
been known to attack humans with their huge pincers.
Known as dinoponera gigantea, the insects have so far only been
found at this size in the jungle-covered northeastern state of
Maranhao, but scientists studying them now hope they will reproduce
outside their natural environment. dpa fz
