tcd, Nokia actually paid $30m. The total of $70 was to be paid over some years, presumably with some milestones to be met. If, for such a modest fee, Nokia can maybe, just maybe, run Qualcomm through another IPR battle, it would be money well spent - even if all they get is a slightly prolonged toasting of GSM.

Nokia is making billions on GSM and they need to keep that going. CDMA makes them an also ran. Interdigital no doubt has some patented technology for some things which might be leveraged into a courtroom and might, just might, bamboozle an ignorant jury.

$30m isn't much in this game. There is B-CDMA which appears to have legitimacy [for fixed applications] though I don't know whether they have any commercial systems. Maybe Nokia gets that for $30m as well as the chance to hold the GSM line?
