***Earth Impacts*** On the asteroid or comet impact, it's a bit silly the Science Minister Lord Sainsbury saying that the risk of substantial damage is extremely remote. It is not only NOT remote, it is a certainty. THERE IS GOING TO BE, WITH A PROBABILITY OF 1, SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE FROM AN INCOMING SPACE ROCK.

The only question needing answering, is when?

Every 200 years there is a decent thump. Every 1000 years something a lot of people are seriously going to regret. Every 10,000 years, big damage, big tsunami [or huge if nearby]. Every 100,000 years, major disaster, tsunami clearing out the Pacific Islands and Los Angeles, Tokyo etc. Those sorts of odds. The way lotteries work, it might be in Y2K!

It's amazing how authorities always try to pacify people who sensibly react by thinking not only that there IS something serious, but the idiot authorities who are supposed to know what's up are detached from reality with their heads in the sand.

Better to say yes, there is a serious risk and we're figuring out what to do.
