Yardeni Appears Ready to Drop
Prediction of Y2K-Related Slump

WASHINGTON -- Edward Yardeni, one of the most widely followed Y2K bears, said Monday he is preparing to admit his forecast of a year-2000 recession was wrong.

In a conference call with clients, Mr. Yardeni, the chief economist of Deutsche Bank Securities Corp. in New York, said he will make a revised forecast this week that either rejects or downplays the possibility of a recession.

"We're now in a Y2K-Is-OK world, which is where I may be in a couple of days," Mr. Yardeni said. He said "if things are still this quiet, I'll simply say I was wrong about Y2K causing a recession."

In a posting on his Web site (www.yardeni.com), Mr. Yardeni said: "If no significant problems occur by the end of January, then I will concede I was wrong about a Y2K global downturn and change the odds of a recession-vs-expansion from 70-30 to 30-70."
