Hey, cool off, Mike! First of all, it's not fully tax deductible by a long shot any longer. Moreover, when it's not abused, this is a normal part of T&E expenses and it's such a small part of the budget that it has no effect on prices to consumers. Used as they should be, occasions such as this are like business lunches and dinners: They mix business with the social so that the people involved are getting to know more about each other in order to deal more effectively in future business settings. As you yourself know, one learns more about a person in a semi-social setting than one can usually in a purely business milieu. What one learns may be crucial when selecting a consultant--to use Lizzie as an example--from a number of qualified candidates for the business. Or Lizzie herself may learn in apparently social conversation that there is something about the key personnel with whom she is considering working that she finds unreliable or professionally untrustworthy, a potential sink hole for her time and efforts. There can be a great deal of economic value in what may appear to some to be a frivolous couple of hours.
