Linux Lines Up More Support From Open Source Crowd

Linux, the open-source operating system, got more support Tuesday.
VA Linux Systems Inc., the Wall Street darling that specializes in building industry-standard computers and servers for Linux, unveiled SourceForge, an online repository for open-source projects that would theoretically ease collaboration by software developers at different locations.
The SourceForge initiative already houses more than 700 projects, according to VA Linux, Sunnyvale, Calif. During seven weeks of testing, more than 3,000 developers from 76 countries registered for the site, which offers software development and management tools, VA Linux said. Projects are not limited to the Linux world. Developers have registered projects for Linux, BSD, BeOS, Palm OS, and Microsoft Windows.
"VA Linux, in combination with Red Hat, has done a lot to further the idea of open source with virtual seminars, giving machines to people," said Dan Kusnetzky, program director for International Data Corp., Framingham, Mass. "This sounds like just another step in the process."
VA Linux also named Bob Russo, a former executive at Cray Research, as general manager and executive vice president of worldwide operations.
In other Linux news, SuSE Inc. said Tuesday it is offering a beta version of SuSE Linux 6.3 available for the Macintosh PowerPC. A free CD with Linux and some applications is available directly from SuSE, based in Nurnburg, Germany, with North American offices in Oakland, Calif.
Linux has caught the imagination of many software programmers and other technofiles but it is unclear how successful it has been in mainstream corporate computing, some observers said.
But Kusnetzky said IDC market statistics for 1999 to be released later this month show real growth for the open-source code operating system, not only at the server level but on the client level as well. |
