Well, if I remember my old catechism days, Mary herself was "immaculately" conceived and therefore was sinless. She is co-redeemer with Christ. Popes weren't "infallible" until sometime in the 1800's and therefore couldn't decree with any "absolute" authority.

Actually, you seem to know more about the history of my ex-upbringing than I do. However, through it all, my sister-in-law's eyes were opened years ago when I pointed out that Rome teaches the priest has the mystical ability to transform the bread into the "actual" body of Christ. She thought I was crazy until I showed her the word Transubstantiation in Webster's Dictionary. ('Till this day, I still don't know why they skip the wine.)

It was the beginning of her journey in which she found Christ. (well you know what I mean when I say "found")
