The advantage of using the therapeutic index is that it is a dimensionless quantity and is directly comparable across drugs. The higher the index the better since there's more room for error without adverse consequences.

It's sort of like plotting stock charts on a logarithmic scale. That way equal increments correspond to equal percentage changes in price. That makes two charts easily comparable.
