INTEL Pentium III 750 & 800

By Marc Prior, 04 Janvier 2000

From the output of Athlon, AMD and INTEL deliver a ceaseless race to the MHz. Last " record " dates some for a processor x86 marketed, Athlon 750 MHz launched 29 Novembre. INTEL was to react, and thus announced on December 20 of new versions of its Pentium III 0.18 Micron " Coppermine " given rhythm to 750 and 800 MHz.

Two frequencies, three versions

To start, it is wise to know that Pentium III 750 and 800 MHz exist in 3 distinct versions, namely Pentium III 750, Pentium III 800 and Pentium III 800 B Différence between these the last two processors? Whereas the first uses a bus of 100 MHz and a multiplying coefficient of 8x, the second uses a bus given rhythm to 133 MHz and a coefficient of 6x.

Pentium III 750 & 800 are thus compatible with chipset BX, on the condition of having a rather recent mother board, oldest not being inevitably compatible on the level of the voltage (among the mother boards functioning BX one finds in particular ABIT BH6 1.1, BX 6 2, BE6, BE6 II, BF6, ASUS P2B 1.12, P2B-F, P3B-F 1.03 and MSI 6163, 6163 Pro, 6199)

It should be noted that for the moment these processors are announced only with the format Slot One SECC2. However versions Socket 370 FC-PGA should make their appearance in little time.

You said Coppermine?

With the case or you would not have read the test of Pentium III ' E' Coppermine, here a fast summary of the specifications of Coppermine. In fact, Cœur of the processor properly spoke remains the same one is based on this good old woman structures P6. The principal change is done on the level of the mask of second level. On old Pentium III, they were two chips of 256 KB each one external with the processor is given rhythm to 50% of the frequency of this last.

With Coppermine, this mask passes has 256 KB " only "... but it is much faster bus integré with the processor with properly spoken. Firstly, it is given rhythm at the same frequency that the processor, secondo it has a width of bus doubled, and thirdly he is more effective of share his method of mapping (8 Way Set Associative against 2 Way before) and his proximity compared to the CPU which confers to him latency times even more reduced. This mask, coupled has an increase in the size of the different buffer, makes it possible Coppermine to be 10 to 20% more powerful than Pentium III of "ancian generation "... not badly!

Configuration of test

The tests have summers carried out on these configurations:

Mother board Msi 6163 Pro (Celeron & Pentium III)
Mother board Msi 6167 (Athlon)
CPU Athlon 500, 700, 750
CPU Celeron 500
CPU Pentium III 500, 733 given rhythm to 500 / 700, 750 given rhythm to 750 / 800
256 Mo of SDRAM
Xentor 32 175 MHz core / 195 MHz report / Drivers 2.08
Hard Disk Quantum Fireball Ka
DVD Rom Pioneer 10x
US Windows 98 & US Windows Nt4 + Sp5
Drivers Amd Ide 1.22 & Agp 4.45
Certain tests were carried out with the ZD' S Winstone & Winbench 99 (trade mark by ZD Inc), without a checking of the tests being carried out by ZD. ZD does not guarantee the results of the tests.
