Succint as always, Michael<VBG>.....According to one of the Greek Fathers (I think it was St. John Chrysostom), God wills the salvation of all, and provides sufficient grace to each, should they avail themselves. This was, essentially, the Jesuit position adopted at the Lateran Council, against the teaching of the Calvinists, and the basis upon which the idea of Invincible Ignorance developed. Since, for example, the Americas were not Evangelized until after Columbus, what happened to those people? Well, those among them who made the best out of their traditions were saved. As I said earlier, even conservative Catholics, like William F. Buckley, have tended to extend the doctrine beyond its original intent, to include psycho- social impediments to proper religious instruction......... |
