FONAR Installs First High-Field Open MRI in Europe

Health Editors

MELVILLE, NEW YORK--(BW HealthWire)--January 5, 2000--FONAR
Corporation (NASDAQ-FONR), The Open MRI Company(TM), announced the
installation of the first high-field open MRI in Europe. De Madrid
Hospital in Madrid, one of the largest hospitals in Spain, has
purchased and installed a QUAD(TM) 12000 scanner, the fastest, most
open MRI scanner on the market.
The $2 million contract, which includes servicing, brings the
total number of new scanner sales and installations to 24.
Technologists at the hospital have been trained to use the scanner and
it is expected to be open for use soon.
The QUAD(TM) 12000's .6 Tesla platform provides speed, resolution
and patient comfort, features that are not available in many competing
MRI scanners. The scanner uniquely combines high-quality images with
unprecedented openness and patient comfort. The QUAD(TM) offers the
full range of state-of-the-art MRI features and is currently being
developed for MR mammography and MRI-directed surgery.
"Physicians and radiologists throughout Spain are eagerly
awaiting the opening of the QUAD(TM) 12000," said Dr. Juan Abarca,
surgeon and director of De Madrid Hospital. "FONAR's high-field Open
MRI scanners are fast, patient-friendly and they provide beautiful,
high-resolution images. These scanners represent the future for MRI in
all of Spain's hospitals and medical facilities."
"FONAR has launched an international sales campaign to
aggressively market our products by a network of 12 foreign
distributors," said Sol Ginzburg, vice president of sales. "We are
delighted to see these results and look forward to increased
international sales."
In 1980, FONAR introduced the world's first commercial MRI
whole-body scanner. The widespread application of Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) in medicine and biology today is the direct result of
the landmark discoveries and early pioneering work of Raymond
Damadian, M.D., president and founder of FONAR. His seminal
discoveries of the variations in soft body tissue relaxation times, as
well as the cancer detecting NMR signal, are the means used by all MRI
scanners to detect cancer and distinguish healthy versus diseased
tissues. A 1997 U.S. Supreme Court ruling affirmed that Dr. Damadian's
patented discoveries are fundamental to every MRI unit in the
marketplace today.
