Competition rages in handset market

BEIJING?Competition in the mobile phone market is expected to rage this year amid entry of local handset manufacturers.

Foreign brands, such as Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia, currently hold 95 percent of mainland's mobile phone market. The government has approved 15 domestic firms to produce and sell mobile phones.

This year, mainland makers plan to produce 20 million phones. At the same time, China's market only needs about 20 million handsets annually, so the huge gap between market demand and production volume will lead to fierce competition.

In addition, domestic mobile phone manufacturers still rely on foreign companies' key technology, so the local handset industry will probably see a situation of high sales and low profits.
