Chuzzlewit. Your comments are well spoken. Fortuna must have based some of his data from Intl Data Corp. It must be understood that Intl Data's computer data can be at least 60 days run time behind (from what I was told from them). So, October would represent the last month that IDC formulated their market calulations relative to worldwide market share, component availability, etc. It was in October that Dell stated a short term glitch occurred. This "glitch" was a probable show on the IDC's data and could well account for any miscue in Fortuna's calculations.

Fortuna is opportunistic in the fact that he lists the negatives but cleverly disguises the potential positive surprises that Dell will experience next year relative to it's new areas of business. His report reads like a well written essay on the potential downsides of any PC maker. The same report could apply to Sun (in my opnion). The report could apply to any technology company!

I mean his comment "Dell management had one of two options. One is to be less aggressive on PC pricing in order to shore up profitability and risk missing a possible fiscal first quarter buying boom as Microsoft releases its Windows 2000 system".

Now, does anyone really believe that Dell will miss opportunities presented by Windows 2000 due to pricing pressure matters? The opportunities may be missed to a low labor pool, but not pricing pressures. He's of course referring to the all too oft spoke suffering margins.

I wonder if Fortuna has EVER taken the time to visit Dell's operation and/or tour their facilities in Ireland? If not Dell needs to offer him an opportunity to do so.
