SEAC announces South American VOD deal:
Cablevision Buenos Aires Buys Seachange Systems to Boost Revenues With Video-On-Demand, Pay-Per-View and Digital Ad Insertion
January 5, 2000 10:35 AM Eastern Time BUENOS AIRES, Argentina--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2000--New and enhanced revenue streams are on tap for Cablevision, the largest cable television operator in Argentina. With the installation of multiple digital video systems from SeaChange International, Inc. SEAC , Cablevision is establishing a residential pay-per-view service and an interactive service to hotels that includes video-on-demand (VOD). The cable operator is also using SeaChange systems to streamline and grow its leading revenue-generating business, local advertising.
"Digital video is creating a range of opportunities for cable companies to deliver new services," said Emilio Rodino, CEO of Cablevision. "We are pleased that SeaChange can provide the product and support quality necessary to ensure revenue growth in a variety of our businesses."
                Interactive Hotel Services
To establish its interactive service for hotels, Cablevision has deployed SeaChange's GuestServe Network System to provide VOD movies and Internet access. The GuestServe Network System enables a hotel room to provide a monthly return that is greater than that of a residential cable subscriber and can be installed at a lower cost. With the digital video server-based GuestServe Network, Cablevision is managing the interactive services from its cable headend operations, freeing hotels from the space and maintenance burden of tape-based systems that only provide pay-per-view movies. This service will reach over 2,000 hotel rooms in Buenos Aires within one year. Cablevision estimates that 3,000 "five star" hotel rooms are within reach of its cable network.
                Advertising
Cablevision has installed three SeaChange Spot digital advertising insertion systems, bringing digital video efficiency and reliability to its leading revenue-generating business. The cable operator's local systems in Cordoba, Rosario, and Buenos Aires have begun inserting local ads into channel line-ups. Like other television operators worldwide, Cablevision has transitioned from video tape players, which require intensive manual labor and maintenance, to the SeaChange Spot digital ad insertion system to streamline advertising operations, dramatically improve the video and audio quality of inserted ads, and greatly increase the volume of local ad placements. Spot Systems are deployed in hundreds of cable television operations worldwide and deliver more than two million MPEG-2-encoded commercials daily.
                Pay-Per-View Movies
Cablevision has also installed a SeaChange Near Video-on-Demand Movie System to set up a 12-channel residential pay-per-view movie service. Based on SeaChange's patented MediaCluster video server software architecture, the fully automated Movie System delivers fault-resilient, high-bandwidth video storage and multiple video streams for various television applications, including pay-per-view, near video-on-demand (NVOD) and infomercials.
