The rewritable CD-ROM, to be called CD-E, is going to cost THOUSANDS of dollars, NOT $200 like the ZIP, and $500 like the JAZ. By the time it is a mass market item, the ZIP (and hopefully JAZ) will be standard on most computers. In the computer industry, 1 month is a long time, and 1 year is eternity, so I really doubt that the CD-E is going to present any competition to the Zip or Jaz for the forseeable future. Further, computer products have a notorious tendency of being delayed for months and even years (i.e. Windows 95, etc..), so who knows when the CD-E will even be produced in mass quantity. Look at Iomega and the Jaz drive: I have yet to see more than 5-6 Jaz Drives ANYWHERE, including superstores like COMPUsa and Fry's electronics. Jaz Drives are being sold as soon as they are received by stores, a pretty good sign for the future, don't you think? (considering that the Jaz has no current competitors) If only Iomega had more manufacturing capacity! |
