InformationWeek Honors CacheFlow Internet Caching Appliance As One of Its 'Most Important Products of 1999'

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2000--

Leading IT Publication Hails the 'High-Performance, Self-Tuning
Appliance That's Simple to Set Up and Maintain'

CacheFlow(R) Inc. (Nasdaq:CFLO), a leading provider of Internet caching appliances,
today announced that its solution was named among the "10 Most Important Products of
1999" by InformationWeek. In the December 20, 1999, issue, Gregory Smith, InformationWeek
senior managing editor, described the CacheFlow solution as a "high-performance,
self-tuning appliance that's simple to set up and maintain." CacheFlow was the only
networking hardware vendor recognized in the article.
"The appeal of (the CacheFlow) appliances is their simplicity: Relying on a
self-tuning, ready-to-run box to provide a specific set of services eases deployment and
administrative burdens in complex networks," Smith wrote in InformationWeek.
"Increasingly, caching Web content is critical for both enterprises that need to keep
their WAN links to the Internet from being overrun by their employees' needs, and for
Web-site administrators who must walk the expensive tightrope between having sufficient
Web-server capacity to respond to sudden surges in traffic vs. maintaining a more
affordable level of service that's sufficient more than 90 percent of the time."
The recognition in InformationWeek follows another prestigious magazine award. In its
January 4, 2000, issue, PC Magazine selected the CacheFlow 500 as the only caching
product among its "Best of 1999" list of the most significant technology products of the
year. In September 1999, PC Magazine had named the CacheFlow 500 "Editor's Choice" in a
test of caching products.
CacheFlow appliances locally store and serve the Internet content most often requested
by users, while simultaneously monitoring the source of that content for changes. In
doing so, CacheFlow's operating system, CacheOS(TM), and custom hardware improve response
time for Internet users, deliver fresher content and more efficiently utilize existing
bandwidth.
"CacheOS, however, isn't merely a more efficient operating system," Smith wrote in
InformationWeek. "By automatically refreshing cached objects before users request them,
based on an algorithm that monitors both the frequency with which an object is requested
and how often it's updated, CacheFlow appliances improve on the hit ratio of more
conventional caches. Even when an object can't be served from the cache, the CacheOS
automatically begins fetching objects referred to in an HTML page, such as banners and
images, as the HTML page itself is being retrieved."
"InformationWeek is one of the world's most influential business technology magazines,
so this recognition is a tremendous endorsement of CacheFlow and our Internet caching
appliances," said Stu Aaron, vice president of marketing and product management at
CacheFlow. "InformationWeek's readers are the executives who are responsible for
utilizing Web technologies for enhancing productivity and generating revenue. Within
enterprises across many industries, CacheFlow appliances enable the successful deployment
of high-performance, scalable e-business and e-commerce infrastructures."
