How is the DVD-RAM standard different from the DVD-VR standard? Are they compatible?

DVD-RAM is targeted for data storage whereas DVD-VR is targeted for video and audio recording and playback. It is kinda similar to the relationship between CD-R and VCD or DVD-ROM and DVD-video. I think (but i'm not 100% certain) that DVD-VR can be recorded on a DVD-RAM disc, given the proper HW/SW.
