Of course I can't speak for him but, I think AH was being sarcastic when he made that remark.

My two cents are that The Street has figured out that ATHM is not going to be the next AOL and that's what they wanted it to be. You can't have a "next" anything because the unique set of circumstances that were in place when the original came to be don't exist any longer.

The question is, if ATHM isn't the next AOL, what is it? No one seems to be able to answer that....perhaps because it will become as you said, a total anachronism or perhaps because it will become something totally new that no one really has a handle on yet. We all know that companies like MSFT, DELL and AOL came from places that didn't exist before. I would also speculate that even though all of these examples had strong personalities at the helm, they would have been spectacular performers even if they had clowns at the top because of the unique set of circumstances that conspired to form the opportunity they exploited.

Strong personalities or clowns? Doesn't much matter if we have a new drug and every body wants it. I know this offends your sensibilities because you want the "best" technology to win. We all know that that rarely happens....that the technology with the greatest number of "winners" invested in it is what usually wins out over and over.
