CABLE MODEM COMPETITION: HAYES
JUMPS INTO MARKET WITH $179
MODEM

Expect cable modem prices to drop after Hayes
announcement on Mon of a $179 telcoreturn unit in bulk
orders of 10K. Cable modems costs average between $300
and $400, although vendors like General Instrument drop to
$200 apiece depending on volume. "I think (Hayes price) is
very competitive," says Dataquest snr analyst Lisa Pelgrim.
The one major catch with the Hayes announcement: the new
ULTRA cable modem package does not support the NCMS
cable modem standard that offers interoperability. But Hayes
cable modem product group manager Sebastian Pereira tells
us the vendor will offer standardsbased modems once chipset
manufacturers market a standardscompliant product. Leading
cable modem vendors GI and Motorola will see some stiff
competition from Hayes and its competitor U.S. Robotics,
which announced in March that it will market standardsbased
modems this fall. Though Hayes may undercut other vendors
in price, Pelgrim says it may be disadvantaged because of
MSO relationships with GI and Motorola. Robotics remains
the only vendor that plans to market cable modems directly to
subs by flooding retail chains in markets where MSOs agree
tobuy their headend solution.
