Naval Oceanographic Office Selects Sun Starfire(TM)
Servers and Storage Technology for High Performance
Computing and Storage Management

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW -
news), today announced the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOceano) has selected three
Sun Enterprise(TM) 10000 servers and Sun storage technology to improve High Performance
Computing (HPC) and Storage Management. The Sun Enterprise 10000 servers (also known
as Starfire(TM)) will provide NAVOceano with a flexible and manageable solution to meet the
ever-increasing demands of the site's High Performance Computing (HPC) operations.

The NAVOceano site is one of four Major Shared Resource Centers (MSRC) for the U.S.
government, and is regularly ranked in the top ten of all U.S.-based HPC sites. It also serves a
mission critical, ''warfighter'' support role for the U.S. Navy. The NAVOceano site is equipped
with more than $250 million in HPC resources and has been chosen by the Department of
Defense (DoD) to select a common storage management architecture.

As a participant in the DoD's online data storage working group, NAVOceano will use two of
the Starfire servers for mass storage. The third will act as an HPC server that will maximize the
overall performance of the site. The Aeronautical Systems Center (ASC), another of the
MSRC sites, is also using the dual Starfire server system configuration for its HPC operations.

''The storage capabilities, unparalleled performance and resilience of the Starfire servers were
the key factors in our decision to partner with Sun,'' said MSRC Director Steve Adamec.
''Sun's storage capabilities are a key ingredient for successful large scale HPC, and we are
confident that the Starfire configuration will meet both our short-term and long-term storage
needs.''

''We are pleased NAVOceano selected Sun as its partner for increasing the capabilities of its
MSRC site,'' said Thomas Kreidler, president of Sun Microsystems Federal Inc. ''The
Sun-NAVOceano relationship further enhances Sun's position as the premier provider of HPC
server solutions for the U.S government. The dual Starfire servers and storage configuration of
the NAVOceano site will be a useful model for other government-related shared resource
sites.''
