The "funny idea" defense is similar to your beemer me up scotty retort - I think you mistakenly feel you are countering my arguments or something - you are NOT.

Just generally, taxation is relevant to goods/services received, on that we agree. So, I can buy yahoo stock and pay no tax until I sell at a gain. If the stock pays a dividend, then I am taxed on that dividend when I receive it. With property taxes, the services you receive are timely, like a dividend... every year you get schools and services that property taxes provide. If you live in an area where real estate is cheap (like texas) then services including schools are cheap to provide. If you live in the most expensive area then services are expensive - simple economics. You are receiving million dollar services if you live in a million dollar house - NOT the same that you got when the area had median values at 50K - teachers need more money, services like the fire dept cost more etc. That is why property taxes should be based on the current value of housing.

Does your portfolio pay you a dividend in cash or services? If so you should be taxed on it. Is your property paying you a dividend in services - YES. Does a renter receive the same services - YES. Do renters pay for the services, YES, but indirectly.

Of course I vote in all elections Michael but I was not voting in 1978 when these age discrimination laws were passed, for the reasons mentioned in the previous post. My concern is not for myself, but for the people that work for me, that should be clear to you at this point.
