Dewey attended a demonstration of Qualcomm's High Data Rate technology, predicting that it will become the company's preferred wireless data offering, versus the 3G technology path [cdmaOne to cdma2000 1XRTT or "1X" to cdma2000 3XRTT]. HDR is a data-only CDMA technology that is based on standard Internet Protocol (IP), with data from the HDR channel card going through a standard IP router to the Internet, he reports. The technology supports data rates of up to 2.4 Mbps to the mobile device with a return rate of 153 Kbps using the same RF and supporting technology used by cdmaOne, and HDR becomes available simply by adding an HDR channel card to an existing cell site. "The combination of 1X and HDR technologies appears to provide all of the technology capabilities and efficiencies of the ultimate 3G standards," Dewey writes. "Since both technologies are considered to be minor upgrades to existing cdmaOne systems, Qualcomm is providing CDMA service operators with 3G capabilities at a fraction of the cost that GSM or TDMA service operators will have to spend to upgrade to 3G (called wideband CDMA or W-CDMA). This combination of 1X and HDR also beats 3G to market by at least two years, and probably three to five years." > tscn.com.
