I hate altruism too: "selfishness" is good: but what is selfish and what isnt?
I give money liberally (and will even more if my gains continue) to freedom fighter organizations...Pacific Legal Foundation, fighting for return of private property rights (yes we've lost them), CATO instutute, trying hard to education Congress about the free market and freedom in general (Congress listens to them but it goes in one ear and out the other) and Reason Foundation and Foundation for Economic Education, both trying to spread the word about freedom through seminars and magazines. And Jews for the Preservation of Freedom the only "gun rights" organization that truly understands that the purpose of the second amendment was to allow us to defend ourselves from a dangerously powerful government.
Is that "selfish" or "unselfish"?
I maintain all of us are selfish, whether we appear altruistic or not. Some of the most "giving" people deep down want to feel superior to those to whom they give, or feel "guilty" for doing well, instead of proud of doing well.
That's all for now, I'm still studying both subjects, thanks to Mike for leading me to these old posts on the subject of millionaires.
