Lizzie....."funny idea".....was not any sort of defense of anything -- it was part of a summary of how I feel about you, which is generally positive.
I guess I should ask if you drive a Beemer and, if so, do you have some sensitivity in this area. Feel free to respond or not. No biggie.
I think there may be a couple of things you don't know about CA property taxes. One -- they are very reasonable compared to other states. Two -- Texas property taxes are MUCH higher than California's. Three -- CA property taxes are not paying for "million dollar services."
Re #3 (Fire Dept services) -- Couple of years ago I got a short ride to an ER. Was this paid for by property taxes? If it was, I don't know why I got a bill for about $1K. Fact is: CA's "million dollar services" run on bond issues, special use fees, impact fees and the like.
Re the schools issue -- the old geezers down the street paid the freight when their little darlings were in school. Now it's your age group's turn to pay for theirs. Not only are the geezer home owners not a burden to the school system, neither are they out committing a lot of crimes and adding to the tab for police protection and new prison cells.
FWIW, we are in the process of buying/building a new home. Do you hear me whining about property taxes (about the same rate where I live as you have in CA).
And, BTW, I am not quite yet the geezer you seem to think I am. After briefly celebrating the new year at the Big Bamboo, I stepped off the curb and missed the parking lot completely -- stepping instead into a deep pot-hole. Rolled ny ankle and went down hard. This kind of spill causes a broken hip in 100 percent of REAL geezers.
You are a bright woman. If you think fellow Californians agree with you, why not organize a ballot initiative to repeal Prop 13? Probably more young people than old people there. Then again, maybe some of them see it as a benefit down the road. Give it a go!
Best wishes from the cheap seats,
