Intel To Offer Linux-Based Web Appliances

Intel Corp. Wednesday unveiled plans to offer Internet
appliances that run on the Linux operating system.

Intel, based here, said it will market Intel-branded Web
appliances to telecom operators and service providers,
who will in turn market them to consumers.

The devices will run only on Linux, an Intel spokesman
said. The decision to support Linux was based on
customer requests, he said.

Intel has made a series of alliances and investments in
companies that offer competing operating systems to
Microsoft Corp.'s, including VA Linux Systems, Red Hat
Software Inc. and Be Inc.

The devices, scheduled for availability midyear, will
integrate Internet access with telephony features, such
as call management and unified messaging, Intel said.

The chip maker also plans to offer appliances
management software and services packages with the
devices.

"Our strategy focuses on providing telecom operators
and service providers with a cost-effective platform on
which they can offer their services and remotely manage
the new appliances," said Claude Leglise, vice president,
Intel Architecture Business Group, and general manager
of the Home Products Group, in a statement.
