In an interview, Mike Winkler, the senior vice president who heads Compaq's PC business, said Inacom's assembly facilities in Omaha, Indianapolis, Ontario, Calif., and Iselin, N.J.,are running at about half capacity.
"We think we can fill those up easily," he said.
He said the deal has been in the works for about 45 days.
The Inacom purchase will allow Compaq to cut costs in a variety of ways, including finally achieving what's considered the nirvana of the PC-making business -- having no inventory, and only building systems once orders are in hand.
Winkler said the Inacom facilities will build Deskpro, Prosignia and some Armada systems, and jobs won't be lost at Houston's factories as a result.
"We think we can get that much incremental business," he said. He also said that Compaq's new division will continue to work with IBM and HP, but did not mention Dell.
"That's gravy," he said, referring to the revenues from sales of HP and IBM products.
