Wife is Peruvian. She is not too fond of Lucuma. Found it impossible to say what it tasted like. I have tried it in icecream and as best I cna remember it tasted like pumkin. My teenagers, at the time also tried it and said it was o.k. I do not think one can rely on the statistics even if they are accurate. In many areas transport problems prevent mass marketing of quality ice creams. Local products are made and the use regional fruits for flavorings. Thus a large usage of Lucama reflects that it is cheap, not necessarily a great flavor. I have seen "gringo" kids prefer Inca Cola to Coke or Pepsi. And that was in spite of its' piss yellow color.

A quality control manager for 31 flavors moved back to Lima in the 80's. Began a chain called 13 Sabores. (Flavors) His ice cream was the best and won the market from a 100 year old company that had dominated the market. In a few years he had opened up about 10 stores. His best seller was not Lucuma.

Very difficult to tell what local flavors will appeal to other cultures. Root Beer is considered medicinal and horrible by most adult South Americans, but good by some raised here as kids.

In Paraguay we were told to be careful of fecal contamination. Fecals does not sound so bad in a Spanish speaking country. Ate the Ice Cream from one place for 5 years. Never saw any fecals. <g>

In Brazil, I loved Cashew, or Caju fruit. Most U.S. North Americans spit it out. O.K. more than anyone wanted or needed to know.
