Most major IT vendors are adopting XML. You mentioned Microsoft, but Oracle, Informix, and all the other usual suspects are involved. Unfortunately, after ODIS made a big deal of separately reporting the performance of the XML division, it looks like they've decided not to again. XML is "another ticket in the lottery" for this company, but ODBMS looked like a winning ticket too and produced disappointing results.
