Company Press Release
Echelon and Partners Bring the Internet to Life at the 2000 International Consumer Electronics Show
Home Network Exhibits from Cisco, GTE, Microsoft, Oracle and Sun Feature Echelon's LonWorks(R) Networks
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 2000-- Echelon Corp. (Nasdaq:ELON - news), the leader in networking everyday devices, announced today that Cisco Systems (Nasdaq:CSCO - news), GTE Corp. (NYSE:GTE - news), Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news), Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq:ORCL - news), and Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW - news) are featuring Echelon's LonWorks system in their 2000 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) home networking exhibits.

Using products and technology from Echelon, these industry leaders are showing the role that smart devices play in new services that enable service providers to attract new subscribers, reduce customer churn and create new revenue streams.

As shown at the 2000 CES, Echelon's LonWorks system combined with Cisco Network Foundation technologies, Microsoft's Universal Plug and Play technology, Oracle's Portal-to-Go wireless software, and/or Sun's Jini connection technology provides the connection to everyday devices required to deliver service-based home networking and to enable the residential gateway market.

This market is predicated by Cahners In-Stat Group to grow from $200 million in 2000 to $2.4 billion by 2003.

In Cisco Systems' demonstration suite, Echelon's i.LON(TM) 1000 Internet Server, developed and certified under the Cisco NetWorks(TM) program, provides Web access to several devices in the home including lighting devices from Leviton Manufacturing and an electronic door lock powered by a LonPoint® module from Echelon.

Through the secure Internet connection, show attendees can view live video of the home's front door entrance and remotely monitor and control the lock, enabling a distant parent to let their children in after school or to remotely authorize entry by a repairman. The same Internet connection could also, for example, be used by the local utility company to interact with the LonWorks lighting system to deliver energy optimization and management services.

In Microsoft's exhibit, a fully integrated six-room house outfitted with LonWorks products including an i.LON 1000 Internet Server and LonPoint modules from Echelon; lighting devices from Leviton; multi-room audio switching components from Sei; and security devices from Hubbell Wiring Devices demonstrates how a Web-connected home not only benefits service providers but also provides homeowners with enhanced comfort, security and enjoyment.

Microsoft's demonstration also highlights how LonWorks devices interact through Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) with other in-home devices such as computers to deliver integrated applications.

In Sun Microsystems' exhibit, Internet access to GTE's Connected Family prototype home in Dallas, equipped with LonWorks products from Echelon, Hubbell, Leviton, Smart Controls Inc. and the SquareD Company, shows how a service provider can integrate LonWorks devices with Java and Jini technology to offer consumers exciting new services.

Through an Internet connection and a Jini proxy based on Echelon's LNS(TM) network operating system, attendees at the 2000 CES can use Jini services to monitor and control light switches, electrical outlets, door locks, thermostats, circuit breakers and security sensors in the Dallas home.

The power of Internet access to everyday devices in the home is further evidenced by a second Sun exhibit, which shows Oracle's Portal-to-Go wireless Internet software on top of a LonWorks network and Echelon's LNS based Jini proxy. The Oracle software provides wireless access to Web content, including the Jini services provided by LonWorks devices.

For example, Sun demonstrates how a digital mobile phone with a Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) micro browser can receive notification when someone presses a LonWorks powered doorbell button and, in response, how the telephone user can remotely unlock the LonWorks enabled front door by using commands entered into the telephone keypad.

''As we have shown here with Echelon today, broadband connections to the home and LonWorks devices in the home enable delivery of a powerful new service-based model of home networking,'' said Keith Fox, vice president, corporate marketing, Cisco Systems, Inc. ''Everyone benefits from this new model: service providers, application developers, device manufacturers and, most importantly, consumers. Working with Echelon, we are making the connected lifestyle a reality.''

''We are thrilled to see major industry players reaffirming the dominance and importance of our LonWorks system in networking everyday devices in the home,'' said Ken Oshman, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Echelon. ''Echelon has a long-standing and growing commitment to the home networking industry. ANSI and EIA have accepted our protocol as an open industry standard.

''We have taken leadership roles in industry coalitions, serving on the board of directors of the Open Services Gateway Initiative (OSGi) and the steering committee of the UPnP Forum. Numerous companies have released LonWorks products for the home; most recently, Merloni Elettrodomestici introduced its margherita2000.com, the world's first commercially available web-connected household appliance, which uses Echelon's LonWorks platform and powerline communication technology to form a plug-and-play LonWorks network over a home's existing power wiring.

''As has been shown here at CES, our LonWorks system provides the connectivity to billions of everyday devices needed to drive the home networking industry to the next level.''

More than 1,500 exhibitors filling more than 1.1 million net square feet of exhibit space are showcasing their latest products and services to over 90,000 attendees at the 2000 International CES, the world's largest annual trade show for consumer technology. The 2000 CES is taking place in Las Vegas from Jan. 6-9. More information on the 2000 CES can be found online at www.cesweb.org.
