Because there was so much vector found in Gelsinger's body, it is possible that it did replicate and that it reverted from an allegedly safe third-generation version to what was essentially a first-generation adenoviral vector--E1 deleted, known to be replication-competent. Verma says he was "shocked" that the vector was found in distant sites of the body, but thought that rather than replicating, the sheer size of the dose was responsible for the spread of the vector found during autopsy. >>
