Your point is true and good, the power of perception. But perception is ultimately a result of the underlying reality.
The market likes Linux because it is *perceived* as a serious competitor to WinX, it is perceived as a serious competitor because of the *reality* that it is better (and more open).

Marketing aside (it can sidestep reality for only so long) to know the underlying reality is to have a jump on the coming perception. (Disclaimer: individual results may vary, timing is still a factor, several other caveats, blah blah blah...)
