TeraLogic Teams With NDS to Expand IP-Based Digital Datacasting Services for Digital TV
Collaboration to Enable Delivery of Secure Data Over PCs and Set-Top Boxes January 6, 2000 08:31 AM MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- TeraLogic, Inc., a leading developer of broadband digital television and data services products and technologies, today announced that it is working closely with NDS NNDS , a leader in conditional access and interactive solutions for digital television, which control the distribution of digital content to PCs and TVs. The combined technologies of TeraLogic and NDS will facilitate the delivery of open and secure DTV and digital datacasting services to PCs and set-top boxes for ATSC, DSS, DVB and OpenCable markets. This strategic agreement will benefit broadcasters, satellite providers, and cable operators. The two companies are working together to integrate TeraLogic's Janus chip and Cougar reference platform and technologies with NDS' Open VideoGuard(TM) conditional access (CA) technology, which protects digital content while enhancing and simplifying distribution. For broadcasters, it allows them to deploy both DTV and secure data services such as targeted advertising and e-commerce via the PC at a very low cost. For set-top box manufacturers, it allows them to incorporate premium channels and pay-per-view services for broadcasters.
The "open architecture" of TeraLogic's decoder chips enables all-format decoding (up to 1080i), all-format up/down conversion, and high-end 2D graphics processing. The Janus chip is designed to bring DTV to PCs, while the Cougar reference platform expedites the product development process for DTV set-top box and TV manufacturers. Both chips comply with ARIB, DVB and all 18 ATSC standards.
Industry leaders, including Creative Labs and Hauppauge have plans to deploy Janus-based DTVPC tuner cards in the US this year. Additionally, consumer electronics manufacturers are planning to launch TeraLogic DTV decoders and NDS CA for DVB and DSS set-top boxes.
"TeraLogic's Janus chip is a promising complement to our Open VideoGuard conditional access technology," said Dov Rubin, vice president and general manager for NDS Americas. "Our goal of bringing secure digital data to the PC required that we integrate a low-cost, yet complete, digital IC that would support IP data over MPEG and multiple digital TV formats. We are very pleased to be working with TeraLogic to attain this goal."
"We are also very excited about integrating our digital content security technology with TeraLogic's Cougar reference platform," continued Dov Rubin. "The success of interactive data content for digital television relies on offering consumers solutions for both the TV and PC platforms. With the Cougar reference design, we can now quickly extend our technology to applications for set-top boxes."
"This key relationship with NDS demonstrates TeraLogic's commitment to developing the most advanced and extensive digital TV and data solutions available in the DTV market today," said Kishore Manghnani, vice president of marketing at TeraLogic. "By facilitating the delivery of secure digital data content to PCs and set-top boxes, our digital ICs and software are answering the increasing demand for digital interactivity capabilities."
NDS' Open VideoGuard CA can be seamlessly integrated with hardware and software from a range of vendors, and is designed to function as a powerful business enabling tool, which unlocks the door to the secure delivery, access management and protection of valuable electronic information and entertainment content, while providing a platform for additional interactive services, Internet delivery, e-commerce opportunities and incremental revenue streams.
