The drop in gross sales bothered me more than perhaps it should, primarily because for two years I had seen this company as having exceptional underlying growth momentum in its 19mm storage products. Now it would appear I may have been wrong. I didn't expect a rise just yet, but a drop in 19mm sales really surprised me. Perhaps a lag, as Hugh said, from its natural customers as they evaluate new products from Ampex itself.
I'm a country mile from selling, but I am trying to reevaluate. For now, it seems more like they are at the relative mercy of their technical niche customers, and their sporadic buying habits. The oil service companies go on a buying spree one quarter, ease back another. Government spending torpedos DCR sales one year ....can just as easily take off in another. Royalties tend to smooth everything out a bit ....that plus cost control ...and they keep making money. Ampex's line of new products is really quite extraordinary...the 160 line I find particularly interesting in terms of potentially attacking new market areas.. and for a fact we are just now seeing the first traces of a burgeoning visual information age. And Km is indeed a pennies per platter improvement....if they can just get their foot in enough doors. They do have techs that could apply to several large markets someday. Gus' analogy to Thermo Electron moves me .....wouldn't that be especially fine. Till that day when the KM company is their first of many spinoffs.......keep hitting those singles Ampex. Stealing a base or two into new markets. Making some quarters, until the dollars start rolling in.
